The Gilded Ones by Namina Forna
5.0
I read this literally a year and half to two years ago and here we go with another late, but very well deserved review (this may be a long one, TLDR: I loved the book; anyways here we go):
Lil story time beforehand:
This was my first book I bought to get me back into reading after around 8 years of not reading for fun. High school and college really ruined reading for me, so fast forward to my Junior year of college and I really needed a hobby that didn't have so many bits and pieces (being artistic is cute until you are in a 12x12 dorm room lol) and so I went over to my local B&N to see if I could find anything that stood out to me.
Yall...I have never. EVER. Seen a black girl on the cover of a fantasy book. I was shaking in my boots. (At this point in time– I haven't read for fun since the dystopian helpless girl era of 2014, and have not actually looked at bookshelves in the same amount of time) and I was SPEECHLESS and so excited. The Gilded Ones really stood out to me, because of its beautiful cover and overall fantasy element...with a black girl as the main character. Sooooo I dived headfirst into this book:
And I loved it. Wholeheartedly. If I were to very loosely and I mean LOOSELY describe this book, it reminded me of Attack on Titan. Iykyk type of deal. Some people may still not understand why, but just think a lil bit more and let it cook a lil bit and you'll see what im talking about LOL. I really enjoyed the way the plot flowed, and by the end I was rooting for ERRYBODY. The main characters character development is what I loved the most, and I remember just rooting so hard for her throughout the book. I love the concept and the way the world was set up...everything ate for me basically. I'll update with more once I get a good reread, because i definitely plan on doing so!!
