This was the first book in the series that I bought from the Scholastic magazine when I was in middle school and I have read it many times over the years. Digging it out of my storage bins again inspired me to finally fulfill my childhood dream of collecting the rest of the series so I could find out where the story went next.
As it turns out, the first two books (Secrets and Fugitive) were set dressing for the events of this book because now the story is really taking off. Conspiracies keep crawling out of the woodwork as greater threats and even more shady players enter the game.
I have to say that reading Nightmare in lieu of the covid pandemic really hits differently. It is surprisingly topical and could be an interesting conversation starter for kids who might engage better with a sci-fi spy mystery than the news.

Moderate: Violence and Murder
Minor: Body horror, Death, Gun violence, Self harm, Blood, Kidnapping, Death of parent, and War
There is an awful lot of judginess about people's appearances in this series, but it hasn't seemed to go beyond a young kid's very shallow thoughts about outward appearance, so I can't tell if it's deep enough to tag a warning for.
