Overview

A tour of different sub-genres contained within fantasy. This is for both people new to the genre as well as seasoned fantasy readers, encouraging people to try a wider variety of the sub-genres within fantasy and to explore out of their comfort zones while still reading within the genre.

Most of the books here are intended for an adult audience, unless they’re placed in the Children or Young Adult category.

Participants should read a different book for each category (e.g. if they read A Game of Thrones for Epic Fantasy category then they shouldn't count it for Grimdark, though they could read the next instalment in the series for Grimdark). In order to gain the most out this challenge, it's recommended to read a different author for each category (or go one step further and read a new author to you for each category), but this isn't a set rule participants have to comply with.

Participants will have a year and a half to read a book in each category. This allows participants to be able to read whatever they like outside of this challenge while undertaking it and is done with the intention of helping prevent fantasy book burnout and letting people read at their own pace. This challenge averages out to reading one and a quarter books per month, so the pace is relatively relaxed.

* Please read the description of a category before adding a book to a category!

** Due to the subjectivity of genres and it being impossible to make one-fits-all boundary guidelines for each sub-genre, participants are welcome to add books to each category so long as, to the best of their knowledge, the book complies with the category description.
