I enjoy Gaiman's stories most of the time, but misogyny slips out here and there when he's trying to be gritty. Ruins my enjoyment. I catch myself wishing a woman had written them instead.

I also find the "troubles" bit in the middle difficult to understand--doesn't seem to further Odin's/Loki's purposes that are central to the story. No real reason to kill some of the gods who were killed. If there had been some established enmity between them and Odin or Loki, sure, but I didn't see anything.

Encapsulating both these complaints: Balquis' character seems to exist completely for proposes that don't further the narrative: adding a sex(ist) scene and dying during the "troubles" part. I could be convinced there's narrative value there, but I'm not seeing it at the moment.

Neil Gaimen has really great prose and dialogue, but my god does he use those abilities for evil sometimes. Fascinating book. Incredibly long.

A couple too many driving scenes and stays in decrepit hotels/houses bogged down the narrative in the middle. However, overall I found it to be a provocative and authentic-feeling exploration of American culture, rounded out by a slow burn small-town mystery and anchored by a fantastical romance.

for the most part i really enjoyed this! writing was really good and i really loved sam! sometimes i thought the pacing was kinda weird like it sort of pools and lingers on things in the middle of the book that don’t feel quite so important but then again this edition is rather expanded. i also read this faster than most of what i’ve been reading lately despite it being probably twice as long so that definitely counts for something.
