A good friend gave me a copy to read. He found it very funny and I bet he would give it 3 or 4 stars. While I enjoyed parts of the book, I found myself skimming paragraphs of character monologues (internal and external) and would back up if it became obvious that I missed part of the plot. I finished it so I can tell my friend I read it, and I did want to know how it would end. IF you enjoy internal/external monologues, I think you would enjoy this book more than I did.

Bleh. Couldn't even finish it. Unlikeable characters, non-existent plot, drags on and on and on . . . Bleh. An insult to Ireland. And to pigs.

Need an escape from the current stresses? This is an easy quaint mystery. Found it on the shelves of the local library quite by chance. Perfect with a cup of tea.

For years, every time I saw this book on my shelf, I laughed at the title. The pig dug a hole. And then he was completely forgotten for a set of other human characters who were both self absorbed (Yuck.) and odd (Usually something I prefer. Not this time.). I really wanted to love this book but it was only just fine. I don't need to read the rest of the trilogy. :(

Not really sure how I felt about this book. Loose ends, the ending seemed far fetched, but I laughed out loud in several places and I wanted to finish the book.

This was quite funny through most of the story and I enjoyed the characterizations. But it started to drag towards the end, and the "mystery" is never really resolved.

This farce reminded me of when I saw the film, “Wonder Boys” thinking it was supposed to be a serious film. My friend, a guy, said, “It was hilarious! Didn’t you get that it was a farce?!” And I didn’t, because I actually knew professors and other men just like that. In the same way, the main character in this story is supposed to be ridiculous, and yet, I’ve known them. He’s the kind of guy that thinks everything in the world exists *for* him.

On the plus side, the rest of the novel is weird and silly, and it’s a dark comedy with a lovely lilt of Ireland.

I have mixed feelings about this. I enjoyed the writing style, even though at times it felt a little pretentious. I thought the characters overall were fairly interesting, despite not particularly liking any of them. The pig was a strange addition and, aside from literally unearthing a specific plot point, I didn't really understand it. Why a pig? Was there some significance there that I missed? I won't read the sequels - don't know where he'd go with the plot anyway - but don't regret reading this.

I honestly don’t even know where to start my comments when it comes to The Pig Did It. I’m not even sure if I liked it or not, but it was compelling in some odd way. I had to keep reading, just to see where the story went. I didn’t particularly care for any of the characters, and I felt like the author was almost trying to hard to be witty and amusing, but I wanted to keep reading.

There are a lot of soliloquys and odd events, the setting on the coast of Ireland is gorgeous and the sea is almost a character itself, one Sweeney insists multiple times wants Aaron to drown. The characters are quirky, but it felt like the author was trying to be too Irish, or making fun of being too Irish, or loved words, or maybe I was just missing something. Hard to say.

And the ending went a little hay-wire in my opinion. I don’t want to spoil it, for anyone, and this is not a murder mystery so I was fine with how the “mystery” portion was resolved. It’s another piece that just struck me as odd. I actually had to reread a portion to make sure that what I though had happened had.

It was a unique book. The writing had a rhythm and self-consciousness that sometimes I enjoyed and sometimes made me just want to smack somebody.

I’m sure some people will adore The Pig and some hate it. As for me, I may have to see what happens when The Pig Comes to Dinner.

Amusing, but I never really got in to it.
