Never feels like anything happens. Everything goes on for way too long ,there is too much time spent on such little things that you can’t even remember what it’s talking about.

"The Silent Cry" was somewhat more forgiving than "A Personal Matter," yet I still struggled to enjoy it. Maybe I don't have a basic enough understanding of Japanese history to appreciate the significance up the 1860 uprising that was so central to the book. Alas, the milk toast that is the main character still managed to somehow win in the end.

Intense, monumental and foreboding. This novel is a challenging read, those that brave it are rewarded with harrowing reflections of the soul and Japanese society in the post WWII era. You will be unsettled and disturbed.

I will admit this is an excellent book, kind of Greek tragedy meets Kafka. So the low rating is my problem, I just can't stomach the existential story line anymore.

Holy shit. This book needs every trigger warning that exists and more. The absolute BIGGEST downer. If you struggle with depression, run far away because there is no light at the end of this tunnel. I had to FIGHT to finish this one for a work reading challenge otherwise I would have dropped after page 21. 95% of the book took forever to get through then the last 2 chapters went off. Still shook.

DNF at about 40%. This was such a horrible book to read. Not the writing style just the actual content, so grim. Begins with a horrible depiction of suicide and continues with graphic language to describe all sorts of things. I gave it a good shot but just not my cup of tea.

Het vreemdste boek dat ik ooit gelezen heb. Begint heel traag, maar op helft neemt het een grote wending.
