kimsbooks_'s review against another edition
DNF (68%). I really tried to finish this book. I had such high hopes from reading the blurb, but John’s cycle of misogyny, drinking, and destructive behaviour was an underwhelming read. If the book was much shorter or possibly had another POV, it could have been more intriguing. I do get that the repetitive cycle was purposeful, but for the most part, it was a yawn-fest due to the lack of plot. I decided not to finish it because every time I picked up the book it felt like a chore. Perhaps if there had been more foreshadowing, a build-up to a twist, or likeable characters, it might have felt more rewarding for the reader.
Also - Amis including himself into the story was such an eye-roll.

Definite love hate relationship with this one - I hated the first half , dreaded picking it up, found it depressing and repetitive - then suddenly half way through I started liking it, wanting to know what happened to the ridiculous characters laughing or being touched at parts - then the ending I just found rotten really , poorly explained and disappointing. And done things John does are so awful, so glibly described i can’t shake a discomfort about them being set out in what feels like a semi humorous way.
