Picnic at Hanging Rock is a very well written mystery and has left me intrigued. The context alone interested me because it has not been denied or admitted that the novel is based on a true story. It's really up to the reader to determine whether they want to believe it or not. Personally I did find it believable, combining the setting, characters and story arc together. I rarely read Australian authors or novels set in Australia so I'm super glad I got to finish this off and really enjoyed it. It's left me thinking and even now I can't decide what really happened, but that's all part of the reading experience.
