Pretty much all vibes and very little plot that is mostly driven by the main character making questionable (at best) choices. This book had a lot going for it in terms of the MESSY relationships the characters had gotten themselves into but none of it went anywhere interesting. A LOT of this book happened off screen (page?) to the point where there were multiple times I went back to check if I'd accidentally skipped a chapter, which I was not a fan of. It was very monologue-y, funny sometimes, and had minor spoilers for some classics (catch-22, the stranger) for no reason. I think this was trying to be Fleabag except not as funny and without any heart. There was little to no plot, even less character development, and it didn't even really live up to the title... 1.5/5 (mainly because I finished it in 4 days so that must count for something)

I wanted to love this as much as I love Sara Pascoe’s non fiction, but it didn’t grip me

I loved Pascoe’s non fictions. I did have higher hopes for the fiction. It was good but not really in a way I can describe. As someone with adhd I related to the quick snapping between thoughts and it was a quick read thanks to the layout. There didn’t feel like much real plot, it was just the story of any women in her early thirties who is spiralling and twirling with no real direction or sense of purpose. I don’t think it’ll be for everyone but I did enjoy it.

Not good, not bad. Not what I expected. I kept this until the Christmas holidays because it mentions Christmas on the blurb, but if I wanted to read about alcoholism, fucked up decisions and dysfunctional families, I could just have thought about a couple of years ago in my own life as well.

I love a messy protagonist and this was a masterclass in messiness, and the fact that how we see ourselves is only part of a story we tell ourselves and the world.
