I didn't like this book as much as the first one in the series. The narrator changed to the older sister and I found her personality difficult to like. Even in the first book I wasn't very fond of her so I came into this with some bias. This story just made me dislike Lula even more, I found her to be whiny but she's been through a lot so I try to remind myself of that.

The start of the book was really good. It hooked me within the first couple chapters and for a while it captured my attention. Somewhere in the middle things slowed down and I had to keep pushing myself to read but it picked up again towards the end.

I'm really interested to see where the last book goes. I feel like the setting might be one of my favorite places, so fingers crossed!

so glad I remembered there were more books in this series! This was so delightfully creepy and heartbreaking! Major content warning for zombies, car accident, death, hospitals, severe injuries

This was such a strong sequel that handles consequences from the first book in the series incredibly well.
I loved that this book focused on Lula, and the next will on Rose
especially given Roses' powers
.
Lula's motivations make sense. As she explains in the early chapters, of course she'd want to hold on to Maks, the only sense of normalcy she's had in the last two years.
Since this book took place fully in Brooklyn, the reader is treated to more worldbuilding surrounding magical beings and organizations in NYC.
It was great to see Nova again and I appreciate his role as
a brother/son for the family
.
This installment of the series executed horror elements really well, to where I feel this counts as horror subgenre.
The biggest strength I think this series has is the bonds between these sisters and their Bruja community.
I'd love to see this series adapted as a TV show/movie trilogy.
My best friend was lucky enough to meet the author at Book Con, and maybe once Covid has passed and in-person conventions return, I'll be so lucky.
