I'm seeing some bad reviews and I can understand if you went in thinking this was a book for adults that you might not like it. It's a kids book in our library and I read it to enjoy it. It was an easy read and would be good for kids who are starting to dabble in the vampire or pirate world. It's clearly a book that the story is being set up for a series so I was ok that many questions were unanswered at the end. Yes the main characters are a bit stereotypical generic boy and girl but there are a number of other interesting characters to round it out. I'm looking forward to reading the next one.

3.5 stars. The relatively simple story is suitable for older grade school or younger teen readers, though a few 'mysterious' parts may be a bit too obvious for older teens. Twin siblings are orphaned and penniless after their lighthouse-keeper father's death, and rather than be carted off to the town orphanage or adopted by the odious banker, they run off to sea. Promptly shipwrecked, they are separated when each is rescued by a different ship: one by a pirate ship, the other by the dreaded vampirate ship their father used to sing to them about. The rest of the book is concerned with their quest to be reunited. Though the main story arc resolves, it feeds directly into a cliffhanger-ish ending hinting at the adventures and perils of next volume. May appeal to fans of Harry Potter or A Series of Unfortunate Events.

Great intro book to vampirates.
Most chapters jump from conners point of view on Captain Wrathes ship, and what Grace is Experiencing on the Vampirate Ship.  Most of time I was wishing for more chapters on the Vampirate ship.  I found these chapters to be the most exciting.  Looking forward to learning more about the Vampirate Captain who doesn’t seem to need to feed on blood, and Midshipman Lorcan.

I bought this and the second one on a whim. Unfortunately this was mildly disappointing. There was about 20 pages where I was really involved in the story but the other 300 either bored me, annoyed me with the repetition of the shanty again and again and again or just made me wish it was over. The ending was also decidedly underwhelming. I'll read the second one simply because I have it, but that will likely be it.

Very creative, nicely written as well. The author leaves certain things to the readers' imagination (some that are explained in the second book), but it doesn't take away from the story. A few things could have been more thorough, but it's an entertaining read. I found myself unable to put it down from curiosity of what would happen next. Recommended for anyone who wants a taste of something different and imaginative! Recommended you read the second book if you want answers to the mysteries, it's even better.

Not what I was expecting. I felt like I kept waiting for the action to happen. There was a sense of danger for part of the story- but when the series title is Vampirates- you expect a certain level of swashbuckling horror and it never arrived. Sniff!

Connor and Grace are twins who live in a lighthouse with their father. When he dies suddenly, Connor and Grace are left to fend for themselves. Desperate, they steal their father's boat and take off for the high seas, a sea shanty their father sang their only comfort.

But a storm comes up and separates the two. Connor is rescued by pirates, but Grace is rescued by something else. Vampirates. She thought they were a fable, but she's on their ship. Will Grace and Connor find each other?

The first in a series, I couldn't put this down until I finished it. And anxiously waited for the second.

Definitely one of the more iriginal YA novels I've read in a long time. I'm just not sure yet if that originality works in its favor. I'm not quite compelled to pursue the second book in this series.
