Being a classic, The Secret Garden initially repelled me. The word "classic" brings to mind inaccessible language, uninteresting plot, and tired characters. But not so here. This book is a comfort from start to finish. It's a story about healing and magic and that feeling of toiling in a garden and watching it come to life. I was in desperate need of a book that would make me cry happy tears, and I found it.

No spoilers! This book is (at least for me) at the pinnacle of character development. In fact, i'd say character development was the largest factor woven throughout. I've read this book like twice now, the second time out of nostalgia. A very easy story to fall in to, it is a relaxing, mysterious, and intriguing read.

Abundant racism throughout the book, and a child is presumed to be disabled and spoken of in a manner as if he's less than human because of this assumption. Also, adults in the household actively work to convince this child that he's severely sick and is going to die young, which caused him to develop some mental issues around believing he's going to die and becomes a hypochondriac. So I read this for a book club thing (long story) cause otherwise I likely wouldn't have. It's a funny, cute story for the most part. I do like that the children learn some self-awareness and recognize their spoiled attitudes. There is a mystical quality used to describe nature and it's importance.
Definitely have to take into consideration when it was written because there are some racist stereotypes particularly of Indians (the MC comes from living in British colonized India and moves back to England). I then found out that the authorwas part of the Christian Science movement, which holds the belief that you can heal yourself with just your mind and that definitely changed my perspective on the book a lot. If you didn't grow up reading this story I'm not sure I can necessarily recommend it...

An enoyable read, such a familiar story, it felt like putting on a pair of really comfy socks. I loved this story as a child, and I'm re-reading my childhood favourites. I still love it, but I was surprised at the racism in the book, which, whilst I appreciate is of its time felt unnecessary, but it totally went over my head as a child. Great descriptions of the garden, and I loved my favourite character, Dickon, and his love of nature. Mary and Colin, the spoilt girl and sickly boy, and the positivity of the garden give a good message. Believing in yourself, practising, trying hard, and never giving up are the key messages of the book.
