4.5 stars. Unexpected. I missed the reveal initially, and before going back and rereading a good chunk of the book, continued to believe the boys were real for a long time. It was interesting viewing Ethan's story through those two different lenses (one as a doting, overprotective father, and one as a man coming unhinged after dealing with childhood trauma and weathering a pandemic), and I found his character both tragic and hopeful.

Such an interesting twist to this one! Honestly think it could have done with more background on Ethan though, I felt like I knew nothing about him until the end of the story.

Almost inadjudicable, sort of defaulting to 3. Much of the prose reminded me of a Reddit post? In any case I started this book late in our Paris Airbnb and finished it in the waiting room at gare du nord and will always associate it with those places and for that I will always have some affection for it.

But uh 1. I feel like if I started treating cardboard cutouts as real children I would want my wife to take me to the hospital because I’m experiencing psychosis, not (just) PTSD?

I’d like to sincerely apologize to Barb for my dislike of her at the beginning of this book. That is all.
