4.5 A friend sent me this little gem with no comment, so I had no idea what to expect. There's fussy fun Britishness but also a crisp, unsentimental (bit still kind) look into the lives of widows and widowers who know they've reached the last stop (or maybe the second to stop) on their way out of the world. It's honest enough to be kind of existentially disturbing at times, but it's mostly a small story of multiple private lives, very well told.

I enjoyed this book a great deal. The prose is beautiful and the relationships touching. It is also an important reminder of the wretched loneliness which often accompanies old age. The effort required to remain relevant in the eyes of others is often more than they can manage.

This book turned out to be nothing like what I had expected. I thought it would be a silly little trifle of a story about an older lady and the antics of older people living together in a hotel. But in reality, it was glimpse into a life that awaits all of us who grow old. Each character has their own quirks and idiosyncrasies that makes them leap off the page in your imagination. You can clearly see these people living this life and it doesn’t feel like fiction at all.

I love this book. It's gentle and humorous. But it's also about ageing, and it's sad. It is definitely Elizabeth Taylor's masterpiece. If you enjoyed Hotel du Lac, you will like this.

This was the first Elizabeth Taylor I read and I loved it. It's absolutely timeless, witty and insightful. Quite sad too but I'm glad there was an author that picked up these sad, important topics.

Beautiful writing but so damned depressing. Poor old people live in a not very nice hotel and then they die.
