Shari LaPena is back with another overall solid domestic suspense novel.

LaPenaโ€™s skill at creating a story surrounding small-town secrets is on display in her latest. There are a lot of characters to keep track of, especially at the beginning, partly because of all the connections to popular girl Diana, the victim at the heart of the town and story; this really highlights the small-town nature where everyone is connected and knows of each other. One of my favourite things LaPena does in her multi-character books is have them all experience a moment (like a breaking news story) at the same time from their different points of view; it feels very cinematic and I can easily see it playing out on the screen. Riley and Evan, two of Dianaโ€™s best friends, were two of my favourite characters; both seem loyal to Diana (and in turn, each other) but also make hasty decisions like teenagers do. LaPena captures that teenage essence well, without it coming across as petulant or annoying to read. Her skill at dialogue continues to shine here The short chapters make it an easy read, even if the pacing is designed to be a slow burn. The final reveal was pretty obvious, and felt rushed with not enough detail for the motive to feel fully satisfying.

What Have You Done isnโ€™t LaPenaโ€™s strongest work, but is still an enjoyable suburban drama that has me looking forward to her next. Thank you to DoubleDay Canada, and NetGalley for the ARC!

LOVE shari lapena but this was mid. i knew who the killer was in the first 1/4. the storyline with ghosts was interesting but it still didn't save the book.

I would wish to give it a 3.5 because although I stayed up late to finish it because I was so invested, I have some issues with the end at the storytelling devices.

I had an inkling it was Evan about halfway through and then knew for sure in the last 3rd because his diary entries weren't adding anything to the plotline (I found them quite boring) so I figured there would be a reason we were hearing from him. I would have liked if he actually told us what happened in the diary at the end instead of hearing it from Diana. Because yes, he was abused, but to snap like that on a good friend and then kill her in such a cruel way...we needed more insight on why he would do such a thing.

I also am not sure if hearing Diana's viewpoints were needed, I could have done without. It just didn't seem realistic of how someone would feel if they were seeing their own death and aftermath.

Lastly, as a former teacher, NO WAY is a principal ignoring a student saying a teacher broke in her home!! Even if he doesn't believe that. That being said, I can sadly see him ignoring the touches, looks, and even the "accidental" walk into the showers though.

My critiques but the book got me thinking and I enjoyed zooming through it, so 4 stars it is!

I really enjoyed the pacing of this novel. The short chapters were a gift, and I liked the multiple narrative voices. I felt let down by the ending. I had guessed who was guilty from early on. Otherwise, it's a great read with excellent flow.

This was a fun, fast paced read. Shari Lapena doesnโ€™t let me down, she is a reliable read! I typically donโ€™t like supernatural elements in my books, but this one was done really well. I really enjoyed the twist on this one and thought it could be multiple people. The downside for this was that there were so many names to keep up with it got a bit confusing.
