I decided to read this series because I was going to be sitting on the beach on St. George Island for a week, and I thought it would fun to read a good murder mystery based on my surroundings. It did not disappoint. This story is easy to imagine as a TV series. I can see each character vividly in my mind. The relationship between Bennett and Maggie fascinates me. I know I’m not supposed to like him, but their banter is so good that I’m always waiting for them to bump into each other again. It reminds me a bit of the relationship between John Cusacks’s character and Kevin Spacey’s character in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. Bennett even refers to someone as ‘Sport’ as Kevin Spacey does. I can’t help but wonder if the writer is a fan of that film/book. I’m a slow reader, but I zip right through these books and can’t wait for the next. It’s a fun, suspenseful read with refreshing respect for southern, beach life.

Mehdiocre writing pushed this firmly into the "life's too short" basket - especially as it's only book 1 of 4

This was a quick, read, but I felt it was disjointed to some extent and the ending left me confused and like there should be a couple more chapters to finish the book.

The pace was great and the storytelling sucks you in but it feels incomplete. Since it’s a rather short book, I think another 50 pages would have wrapped it up better.

A nice vacation read. I was expecting it to be pretty much throwaway reading, but the plot got a little more complex by the end, and the characters were interesting. The main character did irritate me with both divorcing her husband over pot smuggling, and trying to claim it was basically the same as dealing meth.

This would be a great book for a reading challenge with location based prompts, such as 'book with a strong sense of place'! Or just to read if you'd like to be on vacation right now, but can't be.

I'm really glad I have the whole series of these because book 1 ended super abruptly. Not even a cliff hanger. Just a "turn the page to the next chapter and it's the end". It was certainly a page turner (small town intrigue, murder mystery and awkward love interests) though and I'm intrigued as to what happens next. I sense though that this might be one of those "one book in four parts" rather than a series.
