A well executed story of an alien vessel crashing in medieval France that keeps the narrative in the perceptions of the local people who assume these creatures from beyond are in fact demons from hell. Thoroughly enjoyable in all aspects.
Wow! That was intense and fantastic. It's a crusade - don't expect a happy ending.
I really enjoyed this one despite issues I had with the story in the latter part of the book. Art by Matt Smith is gorgeous. The story itself was put together well and I was very intrigued by the crusade and religious differences elements here but in the end a lot of that was eclipsed by the albeit amazing action in the war with the fleas.
Not a fan of the artwork, the dialogue was quite boring, and the plot did not intrigue. Sadly, I will not continue reading this graphic novel nor the series.
fast-paced
I won this through Firstreads, it arrived this morning. I couldn't resist diving into a medieval scifi adventure. I enjoyed the writing and artwork and I am looking forward to the next installment.
Great storytelling that combines an alien story line with the violence of the Crusade period. I really enjoyed this story, so much that I looked up other works (Barbarian Lord) and am intrigued in that as well. Lake of Fire even ended well I thought, with an open ended end that leaves room for more or reader speculation.
I LOVE this graphic novel. Even the genre specified on the back cover (Historical sci-fi) made me laugh - but that’s precisely what it is. For me, it’s the perfect package - a self-contained story with a great story arc in a meaty enough volume that it provides the reader with satisfaction without s/he/they having to commit to buying umpteen subsequent volumes before the storyline is resolved. It’s a great story too. I was whipping through the pages because the action was intense, and I’ll have to go back and read it more slowly to really appreciate Matt Smith's exquisite illustrations. This is Smith and Nathan Fairbairn's first collaboration; I’m looking forward to many more!
I loved it. The story is simple but hits a lot of good points, if it had the space to really explore those characters and relations I think the emotions would’ve hit harder (ie. When the villagers daughter is dead and he stays behind)
And the art is wonderful, it really had some bad ass panels.
