Id give it like a 3.5
Definitely not the timeline i typically go for but at the same time I couldn’t put it down?? A lot of the other reviews i read say the story gets lost in the romance and i don’t think that’s true at all. I also feel like i’ve read 100 similar stories but this one seems to have its own twists and deeper meanings. I will say the bit after the epilogue and acknowledgments seemed to drone on & was quite repetitive but overall i didn’t hate this book & the original ending was nice.

A delightful fantasy story that feels fresh despite many familiar tropes. The audiobook is wonderfully narrated by Tara Novie and Ethan James Lynch. Novie, in particular, does a splendid job with the monster/seren.

Actual rating 3.5.
I keep seeing this being referred to as a gender swapped Beauty and the Beast tale, but it actually kind of feels more to me like The Little Mermaid if the ocean is a forest and the mermaids are murderous tree nymphs. There is far more talk about hearts and souls and becoming human for me to see it as anything else but that. Serena’s desire to be human and her actions at the end feel far more in line with the original Mermaid story than anything Beauty and the Beast ish for me. Mainly I feel people are using that description because the girl is the monster in this story, not so much that this is meant to be a B&B retelling, just so that’s clear for anyone looking to read this.
Overall this is a good book, though I enjoyed the first half far more than the ending. With the title being what it was and seeing the hints along the way I did expect the sorrow of how things went, along with the bright spot at the end. I can’t put my finger on it, but it does feel like there was something missing. I feel like Seren and Owen are set up to be parallels to the king and the wood witch and it would have been nice to have their story fleshed out a tiny bit more to make that even more clear.
This is very much a bittersweet sort of story, and it does understand the concepts of love and sacrifice very well. I think I just wanted it to dig in a bit deeper in some areas and linger more on the mystery of the king’s intentions. I’d almost call this a YA version of Uprooted for having a lot of similar concepts.

I really liked this book! It’s very fast paced - when I finished the first half I really had no idea where the story was going.
I loved the visuals that the author conjured up. I could not stop thinking how this story would make an incredible video game with gorgeous cinematics and engaging battles. I think it would be absolutely badass, and the epilogue ending would be a masterpiece.
I also liked how Seren’s chapters were written - almost as if she’s singing them.

I ended up enjoying this book a lot more than I thought I would! The first half was just okay, but where I thought it could have ended and been a “basic” YA fantasy/romance it ended up developing into an even deeper story that I really enjoyed. Based on the summary on the back of the book, I thought it might be spicier than my normal preference but I was pleasantly surprised that it stayed pretty PG.
My main grievance is with some aspects of the writing style. The multi-line sentence format of a lot of the female protagonist’s POV chapters made it feel like everything was supposed to be dramatic (and if everything is dramatic and impactful then nothing is) and read a bit choppy. Also, some of the use of all caps felt a little juvenile and took me out of the story momentarily.
Other than that, I ended with a positive impression and am glad I read this book as well as the included epilogue-style short story!
