There's a real dearth of thanksgiving books!
I had never thought much about them before, but I really didn't feel like encouraging my son's "Halloween and then Christmas" obsession so I checked out a few in order to sidetrack him.
Anyway, really cute, funny, and goes into the meaning of Thanksgiving. Plus lots of opportunities for voices, which is my jam!

This five star is completely and earnestly given because it personally reminds me of a very happy point in my childhood. Heart eye emojis for days for books that make me feel like *that* kid again.
About how a family’s Thanksgiving meal becomes a washout when each member ruins the dish they are responsible for and doesn’t tell the rest. The moral of the story is that everything is ok and there is much to be thankful for as long as we have family. It’s sort of entertaining but also troubling - why would everyone lie to each other about messing up the dish they are responsible for? 2.5 stars
This book centers being thankful as more important than what you eat during Thanksgiving. It was a short and enjoyable read.

Thanksgiving is always a big day for the Tappletons, but this year everything seems to be going terribly wrong. First the Thanksgiving turkey slides out the door, into the street, and finally into the pond. When Mr. Tappleton goes to buy the pies there are completely sold out. Their son Kenny had fed all of the vegetables for the salad to the rabbits in Mr. Butterworth’s class the day before. Jenny doesn’t put the blender lid on all the way, and mashed potatoes go flying everywhere. No one has the heart to tell the others what happened, so when it comes time for dinner they all have to confess what happened to their Thanksgiving dinner. Still, they realize that Thanksgiving is about more than the traditional food they eat and they have a great Thanksgiving dinner together anyway.
Thanksgiving at the Tappletons’ is an amusing book about everything going wrong. While some parents might want to point out that the family should have been honest with each other sooner instead of hiding it when things did not work out for them, the end message that family is the most important part of Thanksgiving helps end the book on a good note. This is a book that many parents will enjoy reading to their children.

Every year the Tapplestons' have a Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings. This year it seems like nothing goes right. The turkey is now at the bottom of the pond, the pies have been sold out, the salad fed to the rabbits and the mashed potatoes, well they didn't make it to the table either. As Uncle Fritz's stomach growls and Grandfather is hungry as an elephant times four, Grandmother reminds them of the real meaning behind Thanksgiving:
Turkeys come and turkeys go
And trimmings can be lost, we know.
But we're together,
That's all that matters -
Not what's served upon the platters.
Amen.
At the end of the day, no matter how things turn out with the feast it is the time together with the people you love that matters. I missed having dinner with my parents, hosting and being surrounded by family. I will miss Derek as much as I missed my parents but this time it's his decision to be together on the holidays or not. I loved the illustrations that remind me of my childhood, and as I read the book it seemed like something I had read as a kid. It was written in 1982, so very possible. I hope you get a chance to read this amazingly fun book.

This book was used for a read aloud on Thanksgiving Eve at one of my elementary schools. It's sort of a wolf version of an O'Henry Thanksgiving story. Everyone has secrets to hide, but ultimately, family and thanks are the most important things for a family gathering. (The kids correctly identified the moral of the story.)

BOY does this feel dated. I do dig the perms on every female member of the family.
My all-time favorite Thanksgiving book. I stumbled upon this gem ages ago in a bookstore and read it every year to my students. Now it's an annual read for my family. :)
