A charming middle grades book. Wish I still had a little one I could read this aloud to.

I was expecting something different when I bought this book, maybe that cute stories that children read and see one side and adults read and see the other. I think the book was slow, but in the end it was too fast, things happened without the right time to it, but the end is a good one that put an end to the story.
I was expecting Alberto to be a little bit colder and not this warm heart character, but the friendship between Tito and Alberto is beautiful.

It’s a simple book, one that you read fast and it calms your mind. There’s not a lot of mysteries or sad story. I like it and I think I’ll keep this book in my heart for some time, it is magical in its way.

Allora is a beautiful place filled with colorful houses and flying fish. The sea surrounding the town is tempestuous and wild. Alberto is the town coffin maker. He used to build all kinds of things but a plague took his family 30 years ago and now he only builds coffins. Young Tito comes into his life with his magical bird. Alberto built a coffin for Tito's mother not long ago not realizing she had a son hiding out in her cabin. Now Tito is hungry and lonely and seeks solace with Alberto. But a bad man is looking for Tito determined to take him away.

This story reads like a fairy tale. It is a bit dark and grim but filled with interesting magical bits. I don't think it is a story that will appeal to all kids, but it would probably make a great read aloud.

A timeless fable of generosity and compassion in the face of danger. A place out of place, a time out of time, yet with a vivid sense of time and place; the village comes alive. As do the characters, adults as much as the children. Just a hint of magical realism. Quite nice.

My son and I enjoyed this, though the story is unconventional in some ways. Alberto is an awesome character - so much to like about him. I would recommend checking content warnings before reading this to a child, depending on your circumstances, but all issues are handled in a gentle manner.

A gentle introduction to Magical Realism. This was a sweet book with a lot of heart and some genuinely emotional moments that were surprising given its apparent aim at younger readers.

Mrzí mě nicméně ne zrovna zdařilý překlad a zpracování knihy.
