Voici un bon gros double-pavé totalement jouissif jusqu’à ses dernières pages. Point de véritable horreur ou ni de pure de science-fiction dans ce roman psychologique qui flirte avec le sadisme. King nous isole un petit village du reste du monde. Pas d’explication, aucune raison particulière pour qu’un beau jour le village se retrouve prisonnier d’une barrière invisible et indestructible. Les efforts du monde extérieur pour détruire le dôme sont vains, et assez pathétiques dans l’ensemble. L’armée américaine en a mal à l’ego.
Mais peu importe l’origine du pourquoi du comment, l’intérêt réside dans le village, dans sa population, diverse et variée, qui se retrouve livrée à elle-même. Ou plutôt livrée à son maire et à son adjoint, le véritable homme fort de la ville, qui assoie son pouvoir dans l’ombre du premier conseiller (équivalent de notre maire, donc).
On entre vite dans le vif du sujet, et c’est dans une ambiance faussement décontractée que le dôme s’abat sur Chester’ s Mill. La chose invisible fait du dégât, du gros, et fait aussi des victimes. King ne nous épargne pas les détails des morts violentes qui égaient le début du livre. Pourtant cette violence n’est rien comparée à ce que va suivre. Car comme le héros le dit souvent avec un certain fatalisme : « le pire, c’est qu’on n’a pas encore vu le pire ».

Emprisonnée sous le dôme, la population va se retrouver à la merci de Big Jim Rennie, grisé par la perspective de soumettre la ville entière à son pouvoir. Le héros, un ancien soldat devenu cuistot de passage à Chester’ s Mill, va très vite faire office de sauveur lorsque l’armée le nomme colonel et lui donne tout pouvoir sur la ville.

Les choses ne se passent évidemment pas comme prévu, et une rivalité s’installe entre Big Jim Rennie le pourri sans scrupule et Dale Barbara le héros malgré lui. Ce dernier affiche une zen attitude à toute épreuve, voit les coups venir à l’avance et se montre un brin fataliste. Big Jim Renni n’a peur de rien et laisse livre court à ses pulsions de pouvoir. Une milice est mise en place, pour mieux procéder à une manipulation massive de l’opinion publique. Des clans se forment, une résistance apparaît.

Un peu de SF, un peu de gore, beaucoup de psychologie et une sacrée étude sociocomportementale, pour finir sur un dénouement finement mis en place. Joie !

I hate big jim.

Stephen King has written a masterful tale of good and evil. I demolished volume one in two days at a meager 638 pages. Now I have to start volume two immediately.

With a huge cast of characters that kept my head spinning and a suspenseful story that kept my hand flipping pages, I immersed myself under the dome with a hero Colonel Barbara, an evil monster Jim Rennie, Chief of Police, Pete Randolph Jim’s puppet, PA medical angel Rusty Everett, a true psychopath, Junior Rennie and a long list of innocent, hardworking small town people trapped in it’s unknown invisible wall.

I wanted to scream at the injustice, strangle the evil, and send help to the townspeople of Chester’s Mill Maine.

I have no idea how they will get out of it or if they do, but I truly hope the good ones survive and the evil gets what’s due like acid rain on their faces.

Lastly a quote by Jimi Hendrix that Stephen King included in this book that rings true to me.

(FINALLY finished. But really only halfway through...)

I gotta say, this book is not for the faint of heart. If I could only say one positive thing about Mr. King's writing, it would be to complement his incredible talent for imagery - for evoking such vivid scenery, tone, and characters through words alone. The grotesque scenes, especially, read real enough to make me physically ill. But that is what makes this snapshot of a town cut off from the rest of society so powerful and so completely terrifying.

With all the political drama, subtle sci-fi influence, and mysterious cliffhangers, I absolutely can't wait to see what happens next.

Pada hari Kubah, yaitu kondisi dimana Chester Mill yang terletak di Maine tertutup oleh sesuatu yang bentuknya menyerupai setengah lingkaran. Dimana ini tampak seperti pembatas yang kasat mata, dengan pemandangan yang cukup menyeramkan yaitu mayat-mayat baik burung maupun manusia mengitari tempat tersebut. King, sudah membuka konflik apa yang terjadi di buku ini. Tapi, di sini setiap tokoh memiliki kepentingan mereka masing-masing. Menggunakan banyak sudut pandang, seperti film Vantage Point. King mengisahkan betapa rumitnya setiap kasus yang ada. Bukan sekadar keberadaan kubah saja. Tapi juga bagaimana kemudian masing-masing tokoh saling membongkar aib dan rahasia yang sebelumnya tidak nampak di permukaan.

King menampilkan tokoh dalam cerita yang secara keseluruhan memiliki banyak aib dan rahasia yang memuakkan. Namun, bukan King kalau tidak berhasil menjaga rasa penasaran pembaca.
