Age gap, which I generally love. Really enjoyed this & while I don’t care for Eric’s issue with Kyle’s age yet acknowledging his growing feelings for him we then find out that it took Eric 2 whole months to get his head out of his ass. But obv he does & begs Kyle for a redo. Listened via Anyplay.

Finally I’ve read every Rachel Reid book! This was a pretty cute read but nothing too special. I wouldn’t recommend it as a starting point for reading Reid’s books but I don’t think it’s a bad entry in the series.
Now that I’ve read them all my official ranking of the Reid hockey books are:
1. The Long Game
2. Heated Rivalry
3. Role Model
4. Time to Shine
5. Common Goal
6. Tough Guy
7. Game Changer
Tbh I think the audiobook narrator negatively impacted my enjoyment of the last two books so take the ranking with a grain of salt.

honestly had to look up who kyle was cause i didn’t really like game changer i forgot about him but liked this one so much! eric is adorable and i love them, i really liked the development of him and kyle and how eric was trying to keep his distance because of kyle’s age. god the scene when kyle is shouting at eric about his age because eric was trying to break up with him broke my heart.
interesting dynamic between eric and kyle by having kyle take care of eric and teach him how to relax and let go when as a goalie he is constantly on edge. i loved that eric says their age gap only matters when he’s not around kyle because they have so much in common with art and photography. i wish there was more of them after they were together - seeing them in other books was a big plus - so excited that scott and eric bought the kingfisher so kyle could run it.
overall series ranking:
- the long game
- heated rivalry
- role model
- tough guy
- common goal
- game changer

3. I read to complete the series and it was fine. Eric and Kyle were nice enough, but felt they were lacking on page romantic chemistry. And also having Kyle be in love with Kip for 3 years felt like a weird choice and then just getting over it easily was unbelivable. Also nothing really came from Kyle’s backstory with the older man and he needs therapy honestly.
ALSO is there was too much Scott & Kip and too much Maria & Jalo. Like Scott & Kip had their own book that I liked, but I was totally happy where their story ended and didn’t need any more. They came off almost insufferable in this one. I couldn’t care less about Maria and everyone’s weird Jalo comments. Like we get it he’s hot! Like why were they brought up so many times? Are we getting a book for them because of not why waste my time?

i originally gave this four stars and i think that’s adequate even after my reread. i loved parts of this book, most of them were fucking amazing but (and i know this is a huge part of the book and it’s rlly important to both eric and kyle and shit but like) i could not get over the constant “i want him but he’s too young for me/i want him but he doesn’t want me thing. i was screaming at my kindle every time this happened and its still pissing me off so much. i hate miscommunication so like my fault for even reading this because to be fair it was written very well i just hated it so much. i was grinding my teeth with anger when i wasn’t yelling (no joke, my jaw hurts so much)
all in all though, great book would recommend

I enjoyed this book (and am really liking this series as a whole) but I had a harder time getting into this book than the earlier ones. I see a lot of myself in Eric, and a little in Kyle, but maybe it’s as a writing teacher once told me: it’s hard to write characters who really want something, but are holding back. It’s harder for us as readers to connect with them even if we understand their motives.
