I wasn’t really feeling the couple in this book. It was written fine but I just wasn’t super invested in the relationship. So far Heated Rivalry is still the best in the series.

Eh. I didn't connect with this one as much. The way the characters get together relies on making choices I would never make, so it was hard for me to relate or feel much sympathy for them. There were elements of their relationship that I liked but overall I wasn't nearly as invested.

I loved being back in NY with the Admirals! Kyle and Eric were basically a perfect couple who needed to get their heads out of their asses and love each other. I loved everything, except the fact it took them way too long to get it together. It was so fun to see Kip and Scott, but Ilya stole the show whenever he appeared. I love how all the characters in this series are overlapping now that we are in the middle, and I'm super intrigued by Troy and can't wait to start his book next!

I always thought that Eric had a little more to him when we met him in the first book. I didn't realize how much older he was - but believe me I know now after he obsessed about it the entire book. I'm glad Kyle got his happily ever after. I wasn't sure about him at first, but I really think he's actually a good guy who just fell for the wrong people (honestly, who doesn't love Kip?). They were a really perfect couple, and I felt they connected really well besides physically, with their shared interests and values - which I love to see. It just annoyed me how it took FOREVER for them to come to terms with their feelings, then accept them. I would've liked a bigger reunion scene, especially after two months. I wouldn't have believed Eric if he came in telling me all I wanted to hear after not talking for that long if I was Kyle honestly. Using the age gap excuse became very old after a while, especially either their physical chemistry and emotional connection.
The writing was, as always, nice and easy. A little bland because the same plot point was harped on over and over (I can't love Kyle/let Kyle love me because I'm old), but I enjoyed their banter between them and getting to see all of our favorite characters - Maria and Matti (who I was rooting for so hard), Kip, Scott, Ilya, Shane, and even Wyatt was there for hot second. There was definitely more comic relief in addition to the angst and emotional/romantic discovery, which I really enjoyed.

Eric and Kyle
PLEASE be aware that this summary/review is meant for my own purposes in order to help me recall this book and definitely has spoilers. It is in no way a reflection of what I think anyone else will like or want out of a book. It is simply a memory aid and a rough voice-to-text which is completely unedited/reviewed for errors. Read at your own discretion.
Characters: Eric (41) is the goalie for the NY Admirals but is in his last season. He is divorced for about a year snd is lonely. He is bi but has never experienced anything with a man and isn't out because he was married.
Kyle (25) is an art history grad student, bartender, and friends with Kip (we met him in book 1 when he tried to date Kip) and is still pining for him. He likes older men but had a traumatic experience with one when he was 18 so is scared.
This book starts 3 years after the end of the 1st book when the Admirals won the Stanley Cup, the season after Ryan retired (book 3) and some time after Ilya is with Ottawa. Eric and Kyle meet at Scott snd Kip's engagement party. They flirt but Kyle thinks Eric is married because he still wear his wedding ring and he is still not-so-secretly in love with Kip. Meanwhile, Eric has no idea how to flirt cause it's been so long. Eric finally tells Kyle he's bi (and Kyle finds out he is divorced) and Kyle offers to teach him to meet men and also sex stuff. They start hooking up. The conflict arises in that Kyle has sworn off dating older men and Eric has been very clear that he does not believe in dating anyone younger than 30. So, even as they are developing feelings for each other they can't imagine that the other one would consider it. Eric tries a few times to end things but always winds up going back. Shortly after he finally announces his retirement, they acknowledge that they are feeling more for each other but Eric tells Kyle that it can't be because of their age difference and Kyle gets pissed and tells him that he doesn't Get to make choices for both of them and slams the door. They go two months without seeing each other. Immediately after playing the last game of his career, Eric realizes that he wants to be with Kyle. Immediately goes to the bar where Kyle works and tells him. They get back together. In the epilogue, they are at Scott and Kip sweating. Scott and Eric have bought the Kingfisher bar and Kyle is managing it.
This book was pretty cute. The spicy scenes were well done. I am generally not a big fan of age gap and that was a major theme in this book. I did not really connect to link characters, but it was still a fun read.
Tropes: age gap, 3rd act breakup, older/bigger guy more sub in bed

Satisfactory read. Nothing was surprising, but it was a solid read. I liked it.
