This was such a fun book. Wyatt is so dramatic and probably needs a life coach to help with decision making, but I love him. Emyr was a great surprise and idk, he can be my king any day. I love how supportive the main group in this is. Also, the ending - RUDE. Off to buy the sequel. XD

I loved the book. I loved the vast amount of representation we see, the way fantasy tropes are exposed for it's colonialist background, the anti-establishment evident in many characters. The childhood friends-to-enemies-to-lovers was a slow burn I loved. All very good stuff!

Wyatt is an angry mc (for good reason) but doesn't process that anger in productive ways, so I could get frustrated with him at times. I also recognize he grew up in a very restricted environment and has only a few years in the human world to deconstruct - so wyatt overlooks his white privilege in some of his monologues. He also
has to be warmed up to the revolutionary ideas of his friends, and i almost come to count on his friends more than him - i guess that’s why the plot twists work so well

But overall I loved reading it and I think you will too!

This book definitely had a slow start for me and some slow parts in the middle, but it definitely wasn’t slow overall. I didn’t particularly enjoy the prose, but it was manageable (mostly because at times I found some of the parts to be hilarious - intentional or not).

I really enjoyed the characters and the reveal of Briar was done so cleverly. Clarke being a villain, however, was much less of a satisfying reveal. I like twist villains just as much as the next person, but when there is absolutely no foreshadowing or hints as to them being the villain, I just find it annoying.

The worldbuilding was super unique and, at first, I was a bit overwhelmed by it, but it made sense fairly quickly. I enjoyed how it had a fantasy feel while also being connected to a modern world in a way that didn’t feel forced.

Overall, this book was fun and I definitely enjoyed the second half better than the first. My favorite character was probably Briar or Jin.

It took a little while for me to get into the worldbuilding. The Fae stuff didn't include things I'm used to and the Witch stuff didn't do what I thought it would (I thought it'd be like witches can only be women but aHa trans witch), but in the end I got on board with it.

The relationship Wyatt has with Briar is queerplatonic, which should be a big yay from me, but most of the time it felt like Briar was Wyatt's crutch. I'm glad the story addresses this, but it's still a bit tedious to go through.

I like the chemistry between Wyatt and Emyr. Part of me wishes Emyr had a bit more personality to him because there's not enough show of why he and Wyatt are compatible with their personalities.

There's also the ending that bugged me. There's an entire moustache-twirling villain monologue style thing where the grand plan has to be verbally spelled out to everyone in the room, which conveniently includes *everyone* important in that room.

But, like, I adore Wyatt as a character, and he did a great job carrying the story without making it drag.
