While not an #OwnVoices book, this powerful story is written by an author with a personal friendship with a modern Shoshone family and a boy, Spider, who directly inspired this story of drawing upon his close family's wisdom and inspirations from the world around him to find his own courage in the face of standing up before his peers at a spelling bee. And, we need more books about Native people, especially modern ones, portrayed accurately, as less than 0.1% of books published in 2018 were about Native characters. This author also wrote the beautiful and well-reviewed On Mother's Lap.
