“I’m sending you hugs and wish you happiness, if there is such a thing as happiness. A possibility that we can’t entirely exclude, despite so rarely seeing evidence of it in this world that’s been given to us.”

“I wish you all the best opportunities for the future and I wish you happiness if there is such a thing as happiness. I don’t believe there is, but other people do, and who am I to say they are wrong.”

It's an honest and raw book about people living with sadness.

There is something so beautiful and sad about trying to get to know a person by their absence. This was such a cool concept. I love Natalia Ginzburg's writing style.

This was a lot simpler written in terms of language and story that I expected, which made my connection to the characters fairly weak. However, there was a level of humour in it that I appreciated.

such a deeply drawn (and — at times — relatable) portrait of toxic family and estrangement. i loved the starkness of this book, but also wished there was something more to it. previously i’d only read ginzburg’s essays and not found them compelling at the time, but now i’m motivated to read more of her work.
