This is Bridgerton meets fantasy meets spicy in an adventurous and intense storyline with an enemies to lovers trope. The plot is layered so thickly, there were multiple shocks to the plot that I found perfectly paced, the spice was sprinkled and not the entirety of the plot, and the depth of storytelling was phenomenal. There is an ongoing art theme that is illustrated wonderfully with intricate depictions of imagery. There is violence and adult themes - reader discretion advised. FANTASTIC stand alone novel that didn’t leave me feeling incomplete.

It was hard to get into at first, but as the story went on it got more and more interesting. It was full of twists and turns and i really enjoyed that we truly did not know the FMC till the last 120ish pages, so the suspense and mystery was there till the final reveal which was great.

I don’t mind explicit content, but this book took it to an extreme. It felt like that was the whole point of the book. Sex was driving the characters more than I normally enjoy in a book. It was a fun mix of Bridgerton/high society and fantasy but I just don’t think it was super well written.

yes, yes, and yes. i loved the setting of this book, it was giving very much regency era and i just adore that. it had a great plot while also giving you some pretty satisfying spice. the only reason it’s not 5 stars is because i wish both the magic and the battle scenes were a tad more epic in scope. i also wish there was a bigger “plot twist” because i figured it out before the big reveal so it wasn’t as jaw-dropping as i would have wanted. but besides that, it was great! i would be quite interested in picking up the second book in this series of standalone novels.

I absolutely LOVED this book. Envy and Camilla stole my heart. They are one of the best couples I've encountered in quite some time, both as individuals and together.

The plot of this novel is so well done. All of it is magnificent: the game as a throughline, the puzzles and riddles, the intricate web of characters involved. It kept me hooked and guessing, up until the very end of the game.

Maniscalco's world-building is incredible. There are fae, demons, vampires, and humans. Although this novel is an adult spinoff of a YA series, you don't need to be familiar with the Kingdom of the Wicked to dive into this novel.

In addition to all of the above, this slow burn romance is a spicy one. I truly felt like this book had everything: mystery, intrigue, escapism, strong characters, and romance with some serious fireworks. And all of it was well-written and well-plotted.

This book is not for everyone, but if the above sounds like your jam, don't sleep on this series. If you need to escape the human world for a few hundred pages or so - and honestly, who doesn't? - this might be the one to help you do just that.

I am headed directly to the second book in the series, Throne of Secrets, which just came out a few weeks ago and I definitely impulse purchased before I finished reading this one. No regrets.
