Color of Danger is packed with suspense! It starts off with some pretty high-stakes tension and doesn’t let up for very long throughout the course of the novel. There’s not a lot of action necessarily, but the suspense is set up more psychologically. As a reader I got to the point where I almost didn’t trust anyone and about the time I thought I had it figured out, the author threw me another curve. This not only kept the pace of the novel steady, it also kept me engaged throughout.
Mari is the kind of character that makes you smile – spunky, feisty, determined. She loves fiercely and refuses to let anyone put her into a certain mold or expectation. Luke is the yummy doctor who thinks he’s part-cop, but I’m not complaining because his protective instincts made him even yummier.
My one issue with Color of Danger is that I felt the characters could have been developed a bit more – emotionally, psychologically, spiritually, etc. Some of their reactions/emotions seemed a bit one-dimensional or at least too glossed-over considering the situations they were in. I couldn’t really connect with these characters because I never felt like I got inside their heads or their hearts during the novel. However, I did really enjoy watching Mari journey closer to Jesus – her progress was very sweet and without pretense.

Bless her, poor Mari has had time of it! As you will find out when this book starts, Mari had a hand in her brother's death. That would be hard enough, but added to the issue is the fact that her brother was a serial killer. Known as the Smiling Killer, Mari has borne the sigma of being his sister for a long time. Is the killer just wanting to torment Mari more than she has been already, or is Mari's life in danger? Is Mari all she said she is, or seems to be?
Mari is character I really liked for her spunk. She is strong and sassy, but yet very human. Nowa was another character I liked, and then there is Luke. Ah, the good doctor who is virtually a PI and bodyguard as well as an amazing guy. The dialog between Luke and Mari was often humorous and always interesting, even when Mari did things that made me want to scream. There is plenty of fast moving suspense as a possible copy-cat killer is causing all kinds of issues.
While I did figure out who the killer was, I still enjoyed every page of this book. Faith, forgiveness, and healing were all strong themes in this book, as well as dealing with fear, anger and finding hope and stability and coming to terms with where some of the main characters really stood with God. Oh, and wait till you find out why it's called "The Color of Danger." There is a very good reason for that. It's my first book by this author, and it's well worth the five stars.
My copy came from Celebrate Lit in exchange for my honest review and nothing more.

These past few months I've read a bunch of books on both ends of the spectrum, half have been lackluster and half have become new favorites of mine. Alexa Verde's e-book Color of Danger I'm happy to say has fallen into the latter category. I'm not usually overly fond of suspense unless it's written by writers on my tried and true authors list, so sometimes I'm a bit reluctant to give new authors a try, especially when I have so much on my plate. I am SO glad I had the opportunity to read the freshman release in the Secrets of Rios Azules series.
Right from the first page I knew it was going to be totally different from any Christian suspense that I've read before -- in a good way of course! Color of Danger is gritty, suspenseful, with a dash of romance to keep things interesting on all fronts. Mari Del Lobo is very different from from any heroine I've read in the genre. It is refreshing to see a "bad girl" in Christian fic. She had quite the rough life, so it is easy to like her and cheer her on as she fights to escape the clutches of her past and stay alive. Luke Goodman lives up to his name, he is indeed a good man. Like Mari, I was unsure of whether or not Luke was going to be a worthy hero, but I'm happy to say he turned out to be pretty darn interesting!
This book had everything I enjoy reading on a lazy summer day and I'm really looking forward to getting my mitts on the next book to read more about Mari's gang of friends!
P.S. How cool is that cover? Love it!

Solid read.
The premise was interesting and unique. I enjoyed the book. While not my favorite in the genre, it was well written and engaging. I will definitely read more from this author.
