Theresa Meyers is unlike any other author I’ve read recently. She seamlessly takes a paranormal romance with Indiana Jones tendencies and adds all kinds of steampunkness that I normally wouldn’t enjoy. In her stories it just works and I find myself taking the journey with the characters before I even realize that I am. Each of books in this series happen simultaneously, which is another oddity that works for Meyers. There are repetitive scenes as each of the three brothers come together, told in a different point of view in each book.
Shapeshifter China would rather do pretty much anything other then help a hunter do anything. Remington leaves her no choice when she learns he is after the same item she has been after for quite a long time. Remy thinks he knows everything there is to know about paranormal creatures aka Darkin. They’re all evil. China blows all his theories out of the water with her sultry looks, her wide range of emotions, and her ability to save his ass on occasion….and when she has nothing to gain from it to boot.
The Chosen sets an early tempo of fast paced adventure that takes China and Remy all over the world and eventually meeting up with his brothers and a crazy inventor in order to find and wield a very important book against a demon who is also China’s estranged father.
I liked this book, I did, but somewhere in the middle it got wordy and I found myself having a hard time staying focused. Things picked back up again about the time when all the brothers come back together and I came back on board with their journey. This third book is more paranormal then steampunk but it worked and the characters all played well off each other.
This is most definitely a trilogy you have to commit to and read in order. You simply will not get the subtle tie-ins if you don’t. Each book is a lead up to The Chosen. I did think that because this was the finale that Remy and China got cheated out of a longer story like his two brothers…but it is what it is. Meyers is an author I would love to read again!
I give The Chosen by Theresa Meyers 3.75 stars!

Fabulous wrap up!
This is the story of the middle Jackson brother, Remington and the conclusion of the Chosen’s path.
Remington is the middle brother, he is the most educated, the balancing factor between the brothers. Remington teams up with China McGee a shapeshifter, who was involved with Colt before.Remington and China must learn to trust each other to make it through the Hunter trials for Elwin’s 1/3 of the book. As they make it through the tests they learn more about each other. Getting the 3rd piece of the book isn’t the end, though they still have to close the Gates.
The Chosen or Jackson brothers reunite with their pieces of the book of Legend with the help of their friends they figure out how to put the book back together and get where the gates are located. It takes more than some blood and the Chosen to close the Gates and beat Rathe.
I loved the characters, the places, the gadgets and the relationships. This is such a wonderful series. I found it to be a combination of Supernatural, Indian Jones and the Wild Wild West, all wrapped up around the meeting and trustinf of individuals and family values.
If you haven’t read the other 2 books I would suggest reading them first. I definitely recommend all three books. Thank you, Theresa Meyer’s for creating such wonderfully supernatural, fabulously believable stories.

Attorney by day, demon-hunter by night, Remington Jackson is used to being on the sunny side of the law, even in the Wild West. But it’s showdown time, and Remy and his brothers are getting desperate. They don’t have the relic they need to slam the door shut on evil—so Remy is going to have to find and steal part of it.
Enter China McGee, shapeshifter, thief, beauty, and current prisoner. When Remy offers her freedom in exchange for a little light-fingered help, she’s pretty sure she’s going to end the association with a good old-fashioned seductive double cross. But there’s something about fighting through a jungle full of Mayan ruins that makes you want to settle down together. China could change. Remy might be special. But none of that matters if the devil takes them all…
I have to say, I kind of felt a little letdown. That end just felt so anticlimactic. It felt like things had been building to this big confrontation through the other two books and now it's done? I mean, yeah, all things considered, this was a pretty decent ending but I just wanted...more.
I did like Remington. He was interesting and I liked the way he thought about things. I also liked that once he realized his feelings for China, he didn't allow her history with Colt to cloud anything. Yeah, sure, there was a little bit of "I can't believe you did this" but it was only for a moment and he made it a point to make sure she knew he didn't care.
China was intriguing. In the other books, I'd definitely felt like there was a little more to her, but I definitely didn't expect her reveal. Or the way she'd try to cling to it. I was glad that she didn't cling to it for long, once she started working with Remy and realized her feelings for him, and his for her. I did kind of want a bigger confrontation between she and Rathe. I mean, he'd done all this horrible stuff to her and yeah, she did end up with the final victory, but again, it was kind of anticlimactic. Although, he will was pretty great and certainly leaves things open to interesting possibilities.
I did have a little issue with the timing; obviously, there's some overlap for all these books, but (and maybe this is just me) but I thought there were certain events (Colt and Lily's bargains with Rathe, Win and Tessa's battle, etc) that would have happened right before they all met up at Marley's? Yet it sounded like there was the span of days, if not weeks between those events.
As I mentioned, I felt like the end was just...not enough. On the one hand, yeah, ok, things kind of ended as well as can be expected, because the world isn't always all wrapped up perfectly, but there's just so much that I felt was left open-ended. I want to know more: how did closing the Gates the way they did change things? What kind of trouble are they going to experience with the time rift? What's China's new position going to mean for Colt? And really, in general how does that mixed up family handle this brand new world that they've managed to create?

Remington Jackson is a part-time attorney in Tombstone and a part-time Hunter of Darkin. Oh, and he might also be part of a prophecy about The Chosen, three brothers who reunite the Book of Legend to close the Gates of Nyx thus defeating the archdemon lord, Rathe from propping the gates wide open allowing the hordes of Darkin to escape Hell and overrun Earth and eliminating mankind. All his life Remington thought the idea of The Chosen was a bunch of hogwash. Until signs started piling up and they were all pointing towards him and his brothers, Winchester and Colt, as being The Chosen. Now, it’s a race against time to find the three sections of the book, reunite them and close the Gates of Nyx all before Rathe can get his ugly toes wedged in the door. Piece of cake, right? Right?
Each brother needs a Darkin to help get through the traps set up around each piece of the book. Remington’s partner is China McGee, a shapeshifter with a little something extra though Remington doesn’t know that yet. The attraction flares hot between them, but China has been an occasional lover of Colt and that doesn’t sit well with Remington. Unfortunately, his libido doesn’t give a flying fig about her past and wants her all for himself. Can he come to care for a Darkin? And if he can, will she trust him not only with her life, but her heart? Where’s that cake?
This is the conclusion to the trilogy and I must admit to dragging my feet in reading it. I enjoyed books 1, The Hunter and book 2 The Slayer so much I didn’t want the series to end. But I needed to get a move on, so I picked it up and savored it instead, reading a bit here and there. Yeah, I know, not much better on the feet dragging part, but we all cope the way we know how and at least I was moving forward. The story is well-written and the descriptions are wonderful without being overly long-winded. I love, love, love the characters and will miss them very much. A few of the traps and obstacles to the book were a tiny bit hokey, but that’s the only ‘bad’ thing I can say about it. Otherwise this is a great end to a wonderful series.
On the huge plus side, at the back of my paperback edition a novella regarding Marley is included called The Inventor. So not completely over yet! I can’t wait to read it!
