Sentimental outbreaks are like liquorice; when first you suck it, it's not bad, but afterwards it leaves a very nasty taste in the mouth.
Turgenev at his most tepid, a notion previously explored by Gogol, but applied here to the worn jilted gentry becomes dualist now dying trope. It reached realization in Tolstoy (think [b:The Death of Ivan Ilych|18386|The Death of Ivan Ilych|Leo Tolstoy|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1663546974l/18386._SY75_.jpg|234915] meets [b:The Kreutzer Sonata|141077|The Kreutzer Sonata|Leo Tolstoy|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1657554522l/141077._SY75_.jpg|2266654]) but alas this Diary is as if ale was poured through a cloth and then mixed with flat seltzer.
2.4 stars rounded up, well, because it is Turgenev.

The title explains it all... He's lived a nothing life, or rather the thing he decides to discuss on his dying bed is his nothing life and the one love that got away.

I felt like posting a meme. "I'm in this picture and I don't like it."

A dying man delivers a poignant and introspective recount of his life on his deathbed. A wonderful mix of humour and tragedy, just how I like it.
Turgenev was also a Dostoevsky hater but no one is perfect I suppose.

I cannot read, write or speak Russian. That puts me at the mercy of the translator. With that said, I can only imagine what the wordsmith Ivan Turgenev must be.
This is the typical self-loathing style of writing common to the other Russian great Fyodor Dostoyevsky and as one reads this novella one can't help but to think that this must hav been a source of inspiration for him.
This is the tale of Chulkaturin, a downtrodden character who reflects on his "superfluous" life as he lay dyng. Chullie reflects back on an unrequited love that burned him with an awe inspring and unbritled passion, which brought him towards having a tortured soul and broken heart.
