This was so dry and boring oml, reading books for school feels always like a struggle to me, but this literally contained nothing. The maincharacter was a total bitch, also to her daughter, so I get why their contact is bad. This contained so much biology, which I dont like at all, and it was just so dry and boring so yikes please don't read this.

Somewhat bleak and depressing but philosophical book about a lonely ageing biology teacher in a rural backwater of present day East Germany. Using the prism of evolution, the relentlessly stern and acidic woman considers the world around her and the meaning of life. While there were moments of brilliance (most particularly in relation to "the Giraffe's neck"), there isn't quite enough to really engage the reader. Ultimately the teacher is thoroughly dislikeable with an underdeveloped 'Darwinist'/survival of the fittest approach to life, which is so clunkily incorrect. Nothing much happens, the evolution trope seems heavy handed & overused & the writing consists of way too many. Short sentences. Lists of things. Creatures. Endlessly evolving.
