3 ½ Stars!
I actually marked it down by half a star because of the twist.
I had to read that last chapter 4 times because I was so confused. I can’t help but feel fairly certain that he/she him/her pronouns were used. However, I am willing to suspend my belief here and maybe just assume I made presumptions on who was who etc.
Sal and Charlie’s story was very well written and interesting enough to keep you going. You find yourself hating Charlie and feeling pity towards Sal, as well as happy when Sal’s fight comes back. Neither character is particularly relatable, to me, however I feel that these were so well written that people who have experienced in the past would relate.
The secondary characters were also interesting and I thought it kind of odd how Sal’s family members didn’t suspect anything. In hindsight though, physical abuse can often be like what is described in this.
As much as I did enjoy this though, the “twist” wasn’t needed and it didn’t add anything to the story. I normally love a good twist but found myself not liking this one. In a way, it distracted from how good this was in the first place. Because, it was also one chapter and a small epilogue that described a few things. A couple of extra chapters would have made this a little more padded out and left me a lot less confused. The ending felt rushed.
I will definitely be looking in other books by this author because overall I did enjoy this.

I started reading this on vacation sitting by the pool, and on my short flight home and I just could not put it down.
I was intrigued from the get go, desperately wanting to see where the story went, and I wasn’t disappointed!
That twist had me in shock. I had to re-read a few chapters to make sure there wasn’t a mistake in the printing, I couldn’t believe what I was reading and how my perspective of the story telling led me to form the opinions that got flipped upside down! Would 100% recommend this book to everyone I know!

This book was a scary portrayal of an abusive marriage, but the "twist" felt like a cheap trick. Although abuse definitely goes both ways, the ending seemed more exploitative as opposed to bringing awareness to an overlooked group of victims.

Fantastic read, with a twist I really should have seen coming - but didn't because it was so carefully written. Recommend

Without spoiling the plot line, I was definitely left speechless.
I almost want to read it all over again to see how the heck I didn't pick up on the clues all along.

This book was SO uncomfortable to read. Marriages are not what they always seem.

Great twist at the end - had to re read a few pages to get my head around it! Shows how stereotypical in thought we can be. Great book couldn't put it down!

This book is amazing. Ignore the house work, skip work, forget to cook tea amazing. I guessed the twist early on (the writer in me I think) but it did not detract from the story and I was second guessing myself to the final page. Brilliant.
