I actually read it in 3 days, a lot of mystery and Easton Ellis sticking to this insane way of writing.
It felt forced and convoluted. The charm of American Psycho isn't in this one, and the gratuitous sex and violence could not save the fact that it sometimes read like mad libs.
I had some high expectations about this novel, being that it should have been the apex of Ellis' work, and the sequel to one of his best novels, but I was let down. The novel is not particularly bad, all the usual love-to-hate-them Ellis tropes are here, but... it just misses most of the things that made the Less Than Zero so good. It feels recycled, repainted, reheated.
Ellis remains one of my favorite writers, but I feel nothing but contempt for this book :(

ㅤㅤImagine, you have gone to the grocery store. It's a fairly calm 1 PM on a Tuesday, a little bit chilly, but you're in your spring clothes. Wind has blown your hair in a bit of a mess, because you rode a bike to the store and now all that beautiful rollercoaster of scenery you saw is dancing in your mind. You've gone in the store, wandered past cat food and confectionaries, you have stopped by the meat section to select the best option for the pastries you'll bake on Thursday. There's the vibe of an elevator music in the air, employees are stocking shelves, some chubby men leisurely strolling with their baskets and this whole time you've been listening to BEE's 'Imperial Bedrooms' audiobook in your earphones. The narration has been more of a background noise, because you have not found it all that fruitful or engaging. But then this erupts in your consciousness:
ㅤㅤ"The men take turns urinating on her and they keep slapping her face to keep her awake. And then the seizures become more intense and during one of them an eyeball is dislodged, bulging from its socket, and then a semierect cock is pushed in and out of her slack mouth, and then it’s removed once blood starts running down her face, and it’s at about this point in the roughly ten minutes of footage that you finally see it: when the drugs start wearing off and Amanda realizes what’s going to happen to her and she stares into the camera lucidly for one long moment, her panicked expression becoming something else."
ㅤㅤI know, I know, by now I should know better than to take BEE's audiobooks to public places, but there is this small rebellion in listening to some disgusting murder pornography in your earphones, while no one around you is any the wiser. It's like living in two worlds at once and saying a mental 'fuck you' to all the oldies and kids and their parents, while not harming anyone in the least.
ㅤㅤAnyway, that's all that BEE's books are worth to me (and the beautiful bisexual mood). I'm not really sure what the plot is or if I'm supposed to care about it, what the literary value is or if this is BEE's way of saying a mental 'fuck you' to everyone who expects to derive some literary meaning.
ㅤㅤThis book is in the category 'not for me, but I won't be judging too harshly if others like it'. I don't expect every book out there to be suited to my interests or level of 'purity'.
ㅤㅤI read Hitchhiker's Guide series and while I appreciated them, the humor was not for me, but I thought that I'll still respect those raving lunatics who go on and on about Douglas Adams as the god of humor.
ㅤㅤBEE is that, but for weird pornography x Hoollywod-ish characters. I don't really revel in his plots or characters, but in some strange way I'm also not asking 'why the fuck did you write this, why would you waste everyone's time??!" as I would had this been any weird sex thing from Steven King.
ㅤㅤAnyway, I hope BEE and Chuck Palahniuk have had a nice, steamy... conversation about life and their books. They'd be cute together.

Absolutely awful. Seriously. The only reason I finished it is because it was super quick and I kept hoping it would redeem itself. Terrible.
