I really love Edith Nesbit’s writing style. I enjoy the way she weaves a narrative and has these short sentences that also address the reader directly.

The story was fun and light but there were some dark and scary moments that I didn’t see coming. I was also reminded about “precision of language” in Lois Lowry’s The Giver…the kids needed to be really careful using the word “wish”, which would happen by mistake.

I’ll read the rest of the series for sure.

Not really a book for me. I really didn't like the "genie in a bottle" tropes, it was annoying to see how their wishes never worked out and all the mistakes they kept making. I found myself mostly bored as well and the end was very abrupt.

I completely understand the appeal of this book & its influence on children's literature. And as a read-aloud, it lent itself to interesting discussions, from the obvious topic of what we would wish for, but also the impact of class prejudice, gender bias & casual racism that occurs throughout. Whilst the latter may be indicative of attitudes at the time of publication, read on its merits in a contemporary setting, it was nonetheless difficult to look beyond at times.

Funny and clever.
