this is a good time. new villain, and tons of old ones... And somehow, that tends to make for the best Batman stories. pretty satisfying throughout, and there was a great action figure tie-in with this, specifically Superman with the vine creeping up his neck. But this is about the books! So just read it, and have fun.

Definitely not the best Jeph Loeb comic I've read, but it's still quite good. So far it feels like an excuse to cram as many characters as possible into one arc and, as a part time comics reader, I'm actually pretty into that since everyone seems to be characterized pretty well. I'm excited to see where the story goes (and who else plays a role) in the remaining volume.

Celebrated at the time, this was clearly written in the aftermath of 9/11 and returns comics to their roots as pro-war propaganda. It's as moronic as the DC work of the 1950s or 1970s, wholly far right wing and supportive of the establishment. The art is as porny as it gets, with Lee taking every opportunity to illustrate that he's not the typical breast obsessed comic book artist: he's an ass and leg man and shows the female characters bending over as often as possible, and he's merely a pale imitation of McFarlane, who was merely copying the styles of Michael Golden and William Kaluta (though Lee's background cityscapes are straight out swiped from both Mobius and Schuitten).
Loeb is one of the great hacks in industry history, asserting establishment law and order ideology in Bats saying before each issue that he made a promise on his parents' graves to rid the city of the evil that killed them.
If he really wanted to do that he'd kill every millionaire and billionaire, then himself, because that's the real root of all the violence in the world.
