Could not get into the story. Too much of Kevin Anderson's style and nothing of Frank Herbert. Stopped reading half way through.

3.5 stars. The robot conversations are cheesy but the plot is interesting enough. Not as deep as the originals but I was expecting that.

Would have really benefitted from a firm editing hand, but ultimately engaging enough.

Years ago I read Dune and, finding it far more of a slog than anticipated, didn't continue with the rest of the original series. However, having watched the most recent Dune adaptations, including the Prophecy miniseries, I feel an urge to give this epic space opera another try, in chronological order this time.
Somewhere between the grand visual references in the recent screen adaptations, and Brian Herbert's more dynamic writing style, I was immediately and consistently hooked, and tore through this book in a couple of days.

When the only alternative was staring at my desktop background, I enjoyed this novel.
It is absolutely mediocre. Characters are so bland and predictable that even the rather obvious plot twists caught me off guard. I can't deny that it was delightful to see the fundamental tech of the original Dune come into being - and Norma herself is a fairly solid character who gets very little attention.
The only massive flaw, apart from being so terribly, terribly unambitious, is the quality of writing. Sometimes it's great - evocative description, crisp narration. Sometimes it's abysmal. It flips back and forth, sometimes from paragraph to paragraph.
Perhaps all this book needed was an editor to push Herbert and Anderson to create something truly new, not just a handful of worlds to fit into an established universe, but a truly new setting, fascinating in its own right. That would have been something to see.

I wanted to like it, but no, it does not even come close to the original books...it's not a 1 star only because I finished it and if it wasn't connected to the series it wouldn't be too bad

Begrudgingly, I have to give props. This is a solid sci-fi space opera. Like… damnit. It’s so much better than all the other ones I’ve read by them. It’s like they hired an entirely different ghost writer. Was there still some comical evil stuff? Yes. Did they answer the question of, what if Michael Jackson had dropped the baby? Yes. But it was a solid origin story… damnit.
