Longlisted the Dylan Thomas Prize and alao shortlisted for the Gordon Burns Prize, Mrs Jekyll is the story of Rosy Winter, a school teacher who is diagnosed with cancer, and the impact that has on her as well as her relationship with her husband and her sister-in-law. It takes the concept of transforming into a malevolent alter ego from RL Stevenson's classic Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde and uses it to explore concepts like female sexuality (what society deems acceptable vs that which it does not), sickness vs health, the uncontrollable changes wrought by terminal illness, the impact of the public gaze, rage and so much more. At times, this read like a fever dream, something which continues to be a challenge for me. Yet I also found the contrast between traditional prose and a more experimental and fragmentary style to be very effective. It may not have been wholly to my taste, but I found much to like and even more to appreciate in this novel.
