just changed my rating to five stars after discussing its brilliance in class. really fantastic writing. who knew i would appreciate a book written in 1901 as much as I did?
Really smartly written novel capturing the complexity of racism and resistance. I only wish there was some clearer theme around what should actually be done. Sort of leaves you with "god will sort it out" vibes.
This was slow moving at first, but is a beautiful book. I love the dialogue and poeticness.

I’ll be thinking a good while about this gracefully written brutal look at a town made uneasy by post-war racial and cultural changes, when white supremacy would not budge. Very little is melodramatic. Chesnutt nails so many things perfectly and foresees what we still struggle to overcome. Will be promoting this relentlessly.
Such a heart wrenching book that demonstrates a very real reality for many.
*Read for class
The Marrow of Tradition may very well be the best book I have ever had to read for class. The story itself was unlike any I have ever read. While it was rooted in a true event, The Wilmington Race Riot, it also put its own interpretation and commentary behind the history. All of the characters and the plot were so compelling and I wasn't bored once. I would be interested in reading more from Chesnutt.
