The author is a professor of creative writing. His initial approach to the story was interesting but as he delved into the history of religious scholarship on the Story of Abraham and Isaac... I had to stop reading. I read far enough for him to get to the part where "the rabbis" addressed one of his major issues with the story (The lack of argument by Abraham with God) only to have him completely skip over it without comment.

I really liked this. The story of Abraham and Isaac has always troubled me, and to see how much the interpretation has varied is a breath of fresh air. The way the author grapples with the story as a story and how literature works when talking about the Bible was also really, really interesting.
