Three friends are all a bit stuck in everyday life and feel like nothing is fun anymore. They go on a trip together, finding both themselves and each other in the process.

I love books about female friendship, so this was right up my alley. Although the main plot (woman in midlife gets fed up and sets to finding joy and herself) is not too unsusual for a feelgood book, it feels fresh, and it’s written with humour and style.

I liked how the main characters struggle to find themselves and realize that it’s not so hard after all to change your life. In the beginning I just wanted to give them a real shake and tell them to stop moping and DO something. Which they of course do eventually.

The book is really well written and ”scenes” are easy to visualize. I can’t really relate to the main characters, but I very seldom can in feelgood books.

Helen Winters is fed up with life and none to happy that her husband is climbing Everest instead of helping her celebrate her 50th birthday.
When her lifelong friend, Carl, asks Helen and their other friend Kay, to come to Cyprus with her, she jumps at the chance. If her husband can do it, so can she.
However, when she finds out Cara's real reason for asking them both to accompany her, she is none too happy.
Little does she know that her life is about to change in ways she could never have imagined when agreeing to come on the holiday.

Kay, Carl, and main character Helen have been “best friends” since their early days at college. Having gone off and started careers and families of their own, one wonders if they truly are still best friends. They come together to reconnect for Helen’s 50th birthday only to realize that they barely know each other anymore. Deciding to make changes, they all agree to whisk off to Cyprus. It is here that their friendships face challenges and each character has to look at their lives and ultimately their future.

This book would have been better for me once I reached my mid-forties. Sadly, I found myself uninterested in the women and their problems after a while because they seemed to not even really like each other much. To me, the women were constantly bickering, and judging one another. I could completely resinate with Helen though as she had lost her entire identity within motherhood and with grown children and her husband still exploring his passions, she felt completely lost. Helen, along with Kay, who has a mentally challenged son and aging parents to start worrying about, we’re my absolute favorites in the book.

It was definitely a book that makes one think about their life choices more carefully and ultimately makes one cherish their lifelong friendships.

Thank you Netgalley and Cary Hansson for gifting me this arc in exchange for an honest review.

I really enjoyed this book and it gave me major Shirley Valentine vibes. It follows the ups and downs of three 50 year old women taking a trip to Cyprus and re discovering themselves along with their friendship.

This was a nice, light read and a great escape from reality. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a summery beach read.

Three friends since university, now 50, all with very different outlooks on life, go away together for a week in the sun. I felt a lot of empathy with one member of the group, Helen and I enjoyed the exploration of the sometimes tense dynamics between these three women. Always good to find some lighter reading that features characters of a similar age to oneself, especially as you grow out of reading ‘first love’ chick lit and this book certainly fits the bill.
