Miss Hayhem immediately opened up where Rebel Belle left it off. Harper Price is now dating her former archenemy David while Bee is finally back after vanishing in the Cotillion. Everything almost seems to be normal. The Ephors are back, not to kill David but to hone his skills as The Oracle, though there is a catch. Harper cannot be his Paladin till she completed an ancient trial that might kill her or solidify her bond to David.
Like its predecessor, Miss Mayhem is a quick easy read, one that I immediately finished as soon as I sat down. Weirdly enough, I’ve read both books when I was having a bad reading funk episode and this trilogy was there to save my day.
Miss Mayhem is sluggish at first, but once the readers get passed the first four chapters everything would fall into places. Rachel Hawkins did not lose her touch, this installment has her usual brand of snark and sass. We also get to see all of the characters deal with the aftermath of their new pronounced powers. Especially Harper, who is juggling so many things at once, school, pageantry and canoodling with her new boyfriend. There would be strong emphasis on girl power, friendship, kisses, heartache and betrayal.
Miss Mayhem is a swashbuckling filled with snark and action that will surely satisfy fans.

"I loved that little girl, but Lord, what a pill she could be. Anyway, all those times she knocked down your castle, you never once cried. Never complained. You jutted thag bottom lip out and got back to work. You never quit, even when that would have been the smartest thing to do."

I'm unfortunately suffering a reading slump currently and have been since before I started this book so I'm doing my best not to let it affect my review of this book.
It may not have felt as good as the first book in this trilogy but I still enjoyed it and felt that it was a good story! I love David and David and Harper together. The other surrounding drama and action was a great addition. I also quite love these main characters!
I'm anxious to see what happens in the third book.

:\ I'm not sure if some things were just very poorly explained or we'll get more information in the next book, but the last scene with Alexander was frustrating and just. Gah. I'm glad there is only a couple months til the next book comes out so I can see if things are fleshed out a bit more there.

Miss Mayhem wasn't the best sequel but it was pretty good. I really enjoyed reading from Harper's point of view and I love her as a character. She has a lot of personality that translates well in writing and makes the story more interesting. The book also had a great blend of humor, romance, and badassery.
However, it could've been better. After reading Rebel Belle, I had high hopes for Miss Mayhem, so when I read it it was kind of a let down. The story seemed really out of place. Some parts didn't seem to fit into the plot and the book could have been a whole lot longer. Nothing really seemed to be happening; there wasn't a lot going on in the book. The book needed some more important events. The whole thing with the Ephors lacked content and wasn't fully developed. The ending was somewhat unsatisfying. It was a bit anti-climatic. There was just too much missing from the story. One of my favorite parts of Rebel Belle was the amount of badassery, which was really lacking in Miss Mayhem. There was more angsty teen drama than there was action and plot.
While I do think the book could have been better developed and more thought out, it was a quick and fun read and I really enjoyed. I look forward to reading the next one!

What I love about this series is that it fits humor, drama, action, and that little bit of magical element without feeling to stuffed. This book story-wise did feel pretty much like a filler book, but the last hunk of chapters did a pretty good job setting up interest for the third book.

I love Rachel Hawkins, and I loved her Hex Hall trilogy and Rebel Belle was SO GOOD and such a strong start to a new series/trilogy.
I don't know what happened with Miss Mayhem, it was a weak installment, missing Ms Hawkin's trademark humor and spunk, and the only thing I can think of was this was the result of being under the pressure to fulfill contractual publishing requirements; making Ms Hawkins put out a book before it was ready.
That's what I'm hoping, anyway.

Easy, breezy, cute read. Again, I wish she'd get into the mythology of Southern magic and folklore a little bit, I think it could add to the atmosphere a lot. I guess I'm going to have to write that book though haha
