This book is actually a lot country and I really liked it, even though my country music listening experience is very limited. Point is, you don't have to be a big time country fan or live in the country to fall for this fun and summery book! I liked that the main characters, Emmett and Luke, are such opposites. Luke is a somewhat naive optimist who thinks his summer at Wanda World will spell his big break into the music scene. Emmett is struggling with being closeted, his family's financial situation, his mother's health crisis, and feeling like his dreams are too unrealistic to pursue. As different as they are, the boys find ways to give each other support and balance, turning their 'only for the summer' romance into something more serious. Another thing I liked is that while the book does handle some serious issues and the characters make mistakes, it never gets too dire. There's a lot of good communication and learning! Tune in for kissing at the creek, theme park jobs, line dancing, open mics, and timeless summer feels. Makes me want to cook up some cornbread, pour a glass of sweet tea, and blast "Jolene!"

A wonderful story, spending my very formative, self exploring years in a small town in Louisiana, this book hits my heart in all of the most sensitive spots. I never really knew I wanted or needed something like this and it's such a lovely story of growth and challenges living in that world. The south isn't a lost cause, its getting better!

I thought I might pick this one up again soon, so I paused it, but while I still might read it someday, I don't think it will be soon. Nothing against the book at all, I'm just more interested/excited about other books right now.

This book was great! There are definitely things I did not like but it was overall sweet and very wholesome. There was one thing I didn't like:
Luke was so whiney. I get being paranoid about people finding out you are gay but he was extreme with it. He couldn't even say Emmett was his friend and I think that is ridiculous. You can have friends, even gay friends, and not be gay. He was just too much for most of the book.
