Definitely a product of its time, this classic is still a wonderful story.

defalarca kere filmini seyrettiğim hikâyenin kitabını okumak hoş oldu, sonunu bildiğim halde yine sevgili ihtiyar sarı’nın (niyeyse “yeller”ı “sarı” olarak çevirmişler) haylazlıklarını, sadakatini ve sevgisini bir kere daha hatırlamak güzeldi. çocuk kitabı olmasına rağmen 14-15 yaşlarına gelene kadar çocuklarını okumaması iyi olur kanaatindeyim. şu yaşta bile beni hâlâ ağlatıyor.

Great read-aloud for our homeschool. I had never read the story myself until I read it to the kids. It's very good, reminds me of the simple yet vivid descriptions of yesteryear found in the Little House Series. Sad, yet hopeful ending. After reading, we watched the 1950's movie. It was pretty true to the book (except one major part at the end, but story basically the same). Recommended!

This story stands the test of time because of the emotions. It is about the love of a boy and his dog. They don't start off that way but through many difficult times become best of friends. Most people have heard of the sadness at the end of this story when the boy has to kill his dog.
