Amica mia è un romanzo epistolare, una lunga lettera che Ramatoulaye, il personaggio principale, scrive alla sua migliore amica, Aissatou, che è andata a vivere in America. La storia è ambientata in Senegal e affronta il tema della poligamia: Ramatoulaye viene abbandonata dal marito dopo circa 30 anni di matrimonio (e 12 figli) perché sposa una ragazza molto più giovane di lui. Aissatou, al contrario, decide di abbandonare il marito quando questo sposa la seconda moglie soltanto per compiacere la sua vecchia madre.
In questa lunga lettera ci rendiamo conto della condizione femminile nel Senegal, ma anche della cultura e della tradizione di uno stato in cui è quasi impossibile per una donna emanciparsi perché le persone sono ancora fortemente legate alle vecchie tradizioni nonostante il progresso e la modernizzazione.
Il tono della lettera è molto calmo, Ramatoulaye non giudica e non condanna, ma fa una lunga riflessione sulla sua vita, sul significato della famiglia, sull'amore e sulla condizione politica del Senegal.

Une réflexion sur la polygamie qui est bien sûr une condamnation, mais qui est faite de l'intérieur et avec un regard nuancé et intelligent sur les individus.

I knew this was going to amazing but I didn't think it would be so readable! But it was so compelling and by its nature, conversational. Ramatoulaye is a very compelling character as well, and I was very much rooting for her.
