What I liked: The complexity of Nala's relationships - her cousin, her mother, herself - they were layered, they were challenged, and they weren't wrapped up in bows at the end.

What I struggled with: The conflict. The lies that Nala tells are pretty deep and take a long time to come to the surface (much, much longer than I was comfortable with). And at the end, I don't really know what I was supposed to take away from this - I liked the emphasis on self-love, but it kind of didn't feel like that was addressed within the main conflict (the lies told).
SpoilerI really thought Nala would end up doing the photo legacy project - the residents seemed so into it!! - and I was so so disappointed when that didn't happen. And I didn't really feel any emotional impact with the project that Nala ends up doing. Idk, that ending just felt disappointing, because I really loved the time that Nala spent with the older folks.

What I loved: The creation of Blue, the pages of lyrics, the callback at the end.

I did enjoy the writing of this book, Nala and her family, but I found the source of conflict (Nala not fitting in with the activist group) to be painful, and the lies just felt like a Big Deal for me!! It's one thing to lie to someone you have a conversation or two with, but
Spoilerthe fact that they were dating just made it too much, and the ending felt like it glossed over that.

3.5/5 stars. I think.

It was a good book. Some scenes at the end should have been longer (especially the one where Nana breaks up with Tye because she wants to learn more about herself). However, I really loved that book. It was fun and entertaining. I loved the characters and every details about food, music and Nala's environment in Harlem !
I can't wait to read another novel by Renée Watson !

I liked this spin on a romcom. Some romcoms can be quite bland and follow the exact same story with just different names but I enjoyed the themes and the rep in this one!

To start with our main character is Nala who is a plus sized black woman which is already brilliant to see and we need more of that rep please and thank you. I also liked how the theme of activism is portrayed in this book and I have never read a romcom with this theme which is always nice to see.

I think my main issue with this book is the main character is infuriating. And I appreciate it is part of her character, its part of her flaws. But for the love of anything you believe in please stop LYING NALA.

I would recommend this for someone who enjoys romcoms as it was an enjoyable read!

I really liked reading this. I love how teenagers are portrayed in books these days and I think this is a good book for teenagers. Nala is smart, makes mistakes but grows into loving herself and being self aware. The love story wasn’t great but I liked how the writer emphasized the importance of loving yourself first and trying not to change for anyone but yourself if necessary.

“you have got to start learning how to love yourself. For you, it will always be easier to love other people, to put them first and cater to them, to adapt to their needs. You want to really be something in this world—learn how to walk in a room being yourself and staying true to who you are. Yes, there’s room for growth, always. But if the change isn’t for you it won’t last.”

Thank you so much to Netgalley and Bloomsbury YA for accepting my request for an EARC of this wonderful book.

I absolutely loved the writing style, it was so easy to fly through this book in a couple of sittings which is exactly what I did. Love is a Revolution is definitely one of those books that you want to read one more chapter of before you put down.

There is such a wonderfully important message within this book. You should always love yourself and be happy with who you are, you should not change who you are for anybody. I think this is such a key element for the target audience and really key message to be getting across. More books should be doing this!

The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because the main character and her cousin did start to annoy me a little bit in the middle, but they definitely redeemed themselves close to the end. I liked how everything was rounding off. I felt like it was very satisfying.

I am already looking for more books to read from this author and I cant wait to dive into another one. Definitely recommend that you pick this one up!
