The Darkangel by Meredith Ann Pierce

Told like a fairytale and mostly done well. The writing was pacy and compelling but the protagonist seemed less "good and patient and loving" as a classic fairytale heroine and more just "dumb as a brick", which made the message which I guess was meant to be "love and kindness conquering all" feel rather stumbled-into and unearned. Ans then at the end, everything became far too cloying and it started to feel less actually fairytale-like and more like a bad pastiche of fairytale instead.

The language was too hard for me to understand and it left me very underwhelmed. I feel like the description was misleading. Won’t be finishing the series.

This book itself was fine, but the trilogy ends up being awful. Nothing in the world-building makes sense. All the old gods turn out to be
Spoilerancient aliens, which is one the stupidest plots in the history of humanity and the main couple have to never be together for REASONS.
I read this two decades ago and I'm still mad about the entire thing.

discovered this in the library as a preteen; it’s one of a very few books that’s stayed with me ever since, and was instrumental in nudging me across the border from fantasy to sci-fi. I revisit it every few years and only appreciate it more each time. Pierce’s incredible facility with language, visual imagination, and interest in women’s relationships with each other stands out tall in the field of YA. Nobody else was doing it quite like her at the time. I doubt anyone else has since.

This book reminded me a bit of the Narnia books for some reason. Possibly due to the talking lion and the friendly gnome creature that tells stories to the main character. It also reminds me a bit of Lord of the Rings in the sense that some poem/saying is strewn throughout the entire novel. The story was interesting enough, though when you pull it all together it could be summarized in a sentence or two. Also, the ending is a bit of a surprise. One second you are engrossed in the book, and the next page it is over, finished, end of story.

Usually, the amount of detail and description in this book would have bored me, but The Darkangel makes you feel like you are there, living with the characters. I cared what the honey flowers in the beginning of the book looked and tasted like, and even though there wasn't action at every turn of the page, I was entertained. The whole thing felt like a long short story, if that makes any sense. I felt like it was a story being told from a wise elder, or a grandmother figure, and I was just along for the ride. Overall, a pretty enjoyable story.

I enjoyed this book. I liked reading a description of vampires that was different from any other description I have read so far. I kept getting stuck on the details about the world though, especially the day-month, and the passage of time. A little thing, but it kept me from enjoying the rest of the story.

I really don’t know what she ever saw in him, but she’s a bad bitch and I love her.

Pretty good book. There were a few typos in my copy which I found a bit halting. Otherwise, this book reads like an excellent fairy tail of the Grimms variety. Though I always have a bit of a problem when a captured girl falls in love with her captor, no matter what good could be found in him, the story was good enough for me to get past it.

I will definitely be reading the next one. I would recommend this book to those who really enjoy fairy tales in the old fashion sense of telling. Also those who enjoyed [b:Keturah and Lord Death|331830|Keturah and Lord Death|Martine Leavitt|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1173817958s/331830.jpg|322381] would likely enjoy this story.

it started out OK i guess but as i kept reading it became kinda confusing and pointless. i'm aware that others have probably read it and might've liked it but this is my opinion and i DIDN"T like it. I wouldn't recommend it for people with short attention spans because it takes a while to get into the main story.
