Darling book that accomplishes two things at once-- learning about how to make pie and learning about the world.
Have you ever wanted to make an apple pie and gone to the market to get all the ingredients just to find the market closed? Well this funny adventure will tell you all that you need to make the pie and take you all over the world to find them. Great example for author's purpose - inform / how-to and a great addition to storytime. Recommended for K-3
My boys and loved the book. It's silly but we loved the idea of traveling the world! And we found out something very interesting about where cinnamon comes from. It's a good read and we'll be checking others by the author.
Say you want to make an apple pie but the store is closed? What would you do? If you were the little girl in this book, you'd head off on a trip around the world to gather all the ingredients you need. Where do you get your flour? From superb semolina wheat in Italy, of course! Cinnamon? The bark of the kurundu tree in Sri Lanka! Funny text and illustrations make this a highly appealing book-- look for the cow and chicken in parachutes. A real apple pie recipe is at the end of the book.
This book reminds me of Tomie dePaola's Charlie needs a cloak and Eric Carle's Pancakes Pancakes. I love books that show you how something is made. What other books are like that?

This book was on the book list for my 3 year old daughter's homeschool curriculum. She enjoyed it, but I LOVED it! This is such a great book for kids! At 3 she didn't really get why it was so funny, but parents and older kids will find it hilarious that the subject finds her market closed for the day, so to get the ingredients she travels the world and then works to make the apple pie.
It was a fun read! I bought it on Kindle but now I'm going to order a hard copy so that she can enjoy this one for years to come.

A fun book, and seasonal, it a little too euro centric for me
Since the market is closed, the reader is led to Italy, France, Sri Lanka, England, Jamaica, & Vermont to get the ingredients for apple pie.
A fun read to introduce some geography and a nice addition for school requests for apples.
However, I also agree with David "but buying local saves lots of money and energy, and our little Midwest farm used to produce apples, wheat, milk, eggs & more."
