Ok. The investigation plot was extremely stupid and pointless. I get that that's not the point of the novel but either drop the "plot" or try harder.

I've really been enjoying Leigh Miller's Monster Relations Bureau series.  I'll admit I thought the end of book two was a little slow, but I was all in on this one.  Ophelia and Casimir have great chemistry.  They have a past and they both own up to how they reacted in that past, which I appreciate.  The story is more about them than the mystery they are supposed to be solving, but it still worked for me.  I'm definitely interested to see more stories in this world!!

This was so fun! I want to thank the author for allowing me to have an arc. I adore this series and was so excited to finally get the mysterious Casmir’s story. I want to give the warning that if you don’t like the miscommunication trope, this one might not be for you. I did not know how much miscommunication was going to be apart of it but it’s a lot of the book so please keep that in mind! Other than that, their banter/the spice was fun and I can’t wait for the next book!

When Ophelia, the female human lead, and Casimir, the male vampire lead, met seven years ago, he was convinced by Ophelia’s recent hookup that she was just looking for immortality rather than being interested in him personally. Being rebuffed with harsh words, Ophelia left town as soon as she finished college and bought a van.

Now, Ophelia and Casimir are assigned to work together to discover who the rogue vampires attacking humans are, or if they’re a plant by the prejudiced mayor running for re-election. Ophelia is still embarrassed by the previous incident and determined to stay away from Casimir. But when opportunity arises that can only be accessed together, she acquiesces.

Both remember the previous feeling of connection, and the very real attraction is still present. But Casimir has always been sure he didn’t want a life partner, and Ophelia is definitely not willing to put herself out for rejection again!

This story is dual POV, well written and edited, and an angsty, contemporary fantasy romance with a background suspense theme. It stands alone from others in the series (because I haven’t read them yet) but is probably enhanced by reading them in order. I enjoyed Ophelia’s independence and the way she’d established herself successfully in her chosen career. I also enjoyed that she’d taken full ownership of her fertility and was confident in her choices. I empathised with her embarrassment over her last encounter with Casimir. I enjoyed Casimir’s bemusement over his attraction to Ophelia and his growing discomfort with her distance, both physical and emotional, from him. I appreciated that he had to chase her, given he’d pushed her away previously. I enjoyed the building intimacy and the slow building certainty between the characters of what they wanted.

I received a complimentary copy from the author and this is my voluntary honest review.

Ophelia and Casimir.
The pair didn't think they would work together. Seven years ago, Casimir was rude and could never get near Ophelia again. I would've protected her at all costs.

Now, Cleo and Blair need both of them to work together. Okay fine. Casimir, keep your distance.

But no, he has to be a gentleman and make Ophelia fall in love with him. The fire, the foot rubs, the driveway and plug, and the wide open door—we get it, okay? Casimir is a gentleman.

I'm happy Ophelia is happy with herself and life again. This book was cute, and I loved both the dynamics.

I can't wait for the next Bureau story. Or just another story by Leigh Miller to read.

At this point I'm convinced I will love anything Leigh Miller writes. This book was an absolute banger from start to finish. Scorching romantic tension. A tense plot happening behind the romance. Incredibly satisfying ending. Made me laugh a bunch. Loved it and can't wait for whatever she does next!
