When I saw that this was a retelling of Beauty and the Beast, I assumed it would be for teens, but I don't think it is. I would recommend it for mature teens and adults for some mature themes, but no language. And if you didn't know it was based on Beauty and the Beast, you would probably not recognize the similar themes in this story. It's set in Ireland and the Beast is a Chieftain stricken with palsy as a child which left him partially disfigured. There are ghostly creatures, conjured spells and curses all around them as they try to solve the mystery of the Tor.
Very interesting, and a hard book to put down. A bit darker than I thought it would be, but a good, unique retelling.

It took me a while to warm up to the narrator and it didn't please me completely.
I remembered a few aspects of the story but it's been a while since I read the Portuguese translation.
I enjoy it all together.
It's kind of a retelling of "Beauty and the Beast" but it also has similarities to "Wuthering heights" with a different magic, kind like the army of dead of LOTR.
It's been a ride to a familiar world with the wonderful prose of Marillier.

Avevo aspettative altissime ma dopo averlo lasciato lì per mesi non ce l'ho fatta proprio a finirlo, troppo noioso.

There's something about Marillier's writing that immediately draws you into the worlds she creates, and into sympathy or scorn with the characters that come alive on the page.
This is a lovely re-imagining of Beauty and the Beast, and unique enough that I forgot that's what it was and got lost in the story.
A great read.

Master storyteller. If you like gothic elements or atmospheric settings or Beauty and the Beast retellings, you’ll like this book.

I have a bone to pick with Juliet, however, because I do NOT condone dogs DYING!!!!!

Fair warning the Kindle version of this book is ROUGH. But that’s not our Kiwi Queen Juliet Marillier’s fault, and it’s still well worth the read.
