According to the narrator “there are few expressions in the English language that are less attractive to women than ‘Rare Book Dealer’” (p. 4). The narrator is both wrong and dumb.

"[...] and I understood what she had been trying to tell me that day: that the possibility of our deliverance lies not in the future but in the past, in a mystery beyond memory."

i thought it was a bit all over the place in terms of the plot. maybe if i took the time to really digest it over the course of a month without having to read for other classes, i'd understand it better. overall, not the worst but i'm not too crazy about the idea of rereading it

Unfortunately i did not enjoy this book. The characters all felt flat and the dialogue was unnatural and not very interesting. The descriptions were okay, bit the overarching plot largely predictable while there were small things that made no sense and were never explained. I was personally irkes by this thing the author kept doing, which was for a character to have a thought or assumption only to denounce or confirm it in the very next sentence. The book picked up pace after the halfway point but the ending felt lacking and unsatisfying.

This was an action-packed globe-trotting literary issue book with a bit of magical realism. I enjoyed it.

This book is not for me. I get why other people might like it but I just didn’t like it. how it was written and how awful the main characters perspective was really ruined it for me.

The main thing that bothered me while reading this was that the main character explains what just happened a lot instead of us seeing it.

Also I hated the main character after he said “ there are a few expressions in the English language that are less attractive to a woman and than rare book dealer” on page 4. From this moment forward all I wanted was for this guy to shut up.

Also I had to read this for an English class and analyze it and I probably would’ve liked it a lot more if I didn’t have to do that.
